What on Earth happened to the Acadians, better known in most of the United States as the Cajuns? Hundreds of years ago, there was a distinct territory and culture that developed in North America that was a product of French imperialism, located in what is now modern day Canada. However, after conflicts with the British, their descendants had one of the most dramatic and interesting tales of trials and tribulations seen in any community in the US or Canada. In today's video we're going to be discussing the history of the Acadians and what happened to their modern day descendants, such as the Cajuns, and how and why they ended up where they did, with many of these Acadian refugees ending up all across the globe. It is dedicated to George Dorr. Sculpted by Glaciers and landscaped by beavers, Acadia is full of wonderfully unique features. Rounded mountains, tranquil ponds, rocky coastline, & some of the most beautiful trails in the world comprise this marvelous wonder. This film was shot entirely in 4K. We made it to our 41st US National Park: Acadia! And it exceeded all of our high expectations. For our first day in the park we saw the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain, hiked and explored the Jordan Pond area (including trying tasty popovers), and hiked the Beech Cliff Ladders. Bar Harbor is also a really cool town with shops and restaurants galore! And a trip to Maine can't be complete without a few lobster rolls!! Have you ever been to Acadia National Park in Maine? Or maybe you are planning a trip up to the beautiful National Park soon? In this video, I dive into the geologic history of Acadia National Park, starting out over 500 million years ago when the crust of Mount Desert Island was part of a micro-continent near the equator, millions of years before the supercontinent Pangea even came together. I'm a geologist, so when I travel to a new place, I find it extremely satisfying to learn about the area's geologic history so I can explore that place with a new perspective. In Acadia, you can stand on rocks that used to be molten magma deep beneath the surface - you can hike to boulders dropped by glaciers in the last ice age while looking down at glacially carved valleys and lakes - and so much more. I hope by watching this video you not only have a list of places to visit when you do go to Acadia, but that you leave knowing a little bit more about the incredible natural history of this beautiful place.
