Running Ubuntu ARM on Raspberry Pi ESXi

It wouldn't matter much that you can run ESXi on a Raspberry Pi if you couldn't also fire up some virtual machines on it as well. Let's take a look at firing up Ubuntu 20.04 LTS ARM edition on a virtual machine. Then we'll see if we can VMotion that VM from one RPi to another without shared storage. Finally, we'll check out deploying from a template, just like you would on regular ESXi. It's wicked awesome! Simon Sharwood - ESXi on ARM

A rant about the ESXi on ARM and what it signals. Pat Gelsinger said VMware did it because the winner on the edge isn't decided yet. Which is about as big a vote of no confidence in Intel as I can imagine. I'll explain the state of the ARM ecosystem, what might run under ESXi on the edge and where this is all going. *About vBrownBag* SUBSCRIBE! 🤍 Socials: Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 iTunes: 🤍 Google+: 🤍 is a community of people who believe in helping other people. MWC/CTOA 2019 Experimental ESXi-Arm image booting on Pi 4

Another interesting bit of history. Originally made for a Pi 3 with 1GiB of RAM, this was a fun prototype/demo of actually running a VM on the tiny Pi 3B+. Perhaps you were lucky enough to see this in the Dell/VMware booth at Mobile World Congress'19 in Barcelona? It turns out the image boots fine on a Pi 4 as well (did you know the DWC2 USB controller is still present? it's just on the USB-C port). Just contrast this with the "pretty normal" ESXi-Arm Fling available today for Pi 4, that can be managed with vCenter, backed up by Veeam, running regular-sized VMs, etc.
