Video footage from the War in Afghanistan shows fighters of the French Legion in heavy combat with Taliban in Afghanistan. The scenes show the elite units of the French Foregin Legion in several intense firefights and engagements with Taliban fighters. The French Foreign Legion (Légion étrangère) is a military branch of the French Army. Legionnaires are considered highly trained elite infantry soldiers. What makes the Legion unique is that it is open to foreign recruits willing to serve in the French Armed Forces. French citizenship may be applied for after three years' service. After joining the French Foregin Legion every recruit will recive a new name and nationality by the Legion. The selection process is notoriously harsh, and only one in nine candidates will be allowed to serve in the French Foregin Legion. Consequently, training is often described as not only physically challenging, but also very stressful psychologically. Applicants must be between 17 and 40 years old. They must be foreign, though this rule is often glossed over. About 16 percent are French nationals who join posing as citizens of other French-speaking countries, such as Belgium or Canada. The world’s most cosmopolitan military force comprises soldiers from about 140 countries. Recruits tend to come in waves — Germans in the 1940s and ’50s and English-speakers in the 1980s. After the Cold War ended, many volunteers came from Russia and Eastern Europe. They have now been replaced by a surge of applicants from Latin American and Asian nations such as Nepal. Unlike France’s regular armed forces, the Foreign Legion is a male-only unit. And during the first five years of service, a legionnaire is banned from marrying. 🇫🇷 📯 🪓 Each year, thousands of men from all over the world join the French Foreign Legion (Légion étrangère). Most come for adventure. Some for a better life. Many to earn a French passport. But no matter their reason for enroling, ALL candidates must accomplish one key thing by the end of basic training if they want to receive any of the Légionnaire perks: learning enough French to function as a soldier! It turns out that most of these men arrive at the recruitment center in France unable to speak a lick of French, and yet manage to get fluent enough in mere months to understand orders, describe the workings of their HK416F service rifle, and have conversations with fellow Légionnaires. So how do they learn so fast? And what can we non-Légionnaires learn from their method? These are precisely the questions I answer in this video. 📺 WATCH NEXT: How hard is French to learn for English speakers? The legionnaires come from across the world, prepared to fight for a country that is not even their own. In the Legion, they learn to fight in extreme conditions, live together and work as a team. But who are these soldiers and what motivates them? While embedded with the 13th Half-Brigade of the Foreign Legion in Mali, our reporters found out. “The Legion is our home” is the motto of the Foreign Legion, the legendary elite branch of the French Army. Africans, Americans, Asians, Europeans, anyone between 17 and 40 years old can sign up to fight for France. The Legion was formed in 1831 and, to this day, inspires fascination. From the very start, it earned a reputation for being an army made up of wanted criminals. Today though, the Legion says entry is forbidden to anyone linked to violent crimes, sexual assault or drug-trafficking. However, the Legion still gives a chance to those who want to leave their pasts behind, earn a living and serve in an army with one of the best reputations in the world. Only one in five hopefuls makes it through the notoriously tough selection tests and once they’re in, the Legionnaires have to agree to a strict set of rules if they are to stay in. They’re punished if they fail to learn French and misunderstand orders. Claire Paccalin and Fanny Allard followed the 13th Half-Brigade of the Foreign Legion at their French base and during a counter-terrorism operation in Mali. They spent six days camping out in the desert near the border with Niger to find out how the Legion works and what motivates these men to fight for a country that is not their own. Maxime, an 18-year-old Belgian, told them why he quit a carpentry apprenticeship to join the Legion. They spoke to Brandon, an American who drives his comrades crazy by playing country music at the barracks. Then there's Sergeant Giacomo, who started out camera-shy but later opened up about being a Legionnaire. 🤍 Visit our website: 🤍 Subscribe to our YouTube channel: 🤍 Like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍

The French Foreign Legion (French: Légion étrangère (French pronunciation: [leʒjɔ̃ etʀɑ̃ʒɛʁ]), L.E.) is a military service wing of the French Army established in 1831, unique because it was exclusively created for foreign nationals willing to serve in the French Armed Forces. Commanded by French officers, it is also open to French citizens, who amounted to 24% of the recruits as of 2007.[1] The Foreign Legion is today known as a unit whose training focuses not only on traditional military skills but also on its strong esprit de corps. As its men come from different countries with different cultures, this is a way to strengthen them enough to work as a team. Consequently, training is often described as not only physically challenging, but also very stressful psychologically. The French Foreign Legion was created by Louis Philippe, the King of the French, on 10 March 1831. The purpose of the Foreign Legion was to remove disruptive elements from society and put them to use fighting the enemies of France. Recruits included failed revolutionaries from the rest of Europe, soldiers from the disbanded Swiss and German mercenary regiments of the Bourbon monarchy, and troublemakers in general, both foreign and French. The Royal Ordinance for the establishment of the new regiment specified that the foreigners recruited could only serve outside France.[2] The French expeditionary force that had occupied Algiers in 1830 was in need of reinforcements and the Legion was accordingly transferred in detachments from Toulon to Algeria.[3][4] The Foreign Legion was primarily used, as part of the Armée d'Afrique, to protect and expand the French colonial empire during the 19th century, but it also fought in almost all French wars including the Franco-Prussian War, World War I and World War II. The Foreign Legion has remained an important part of the French Army, surviving three Republics, the Second French Empire, two World Wars, the rise and fall of mass conscript armies, the dismantling of the French colonial empire, and the loss of the Foreign Legion's base, Algeria.

A huge thank you to the French Ministère des Armées for uploading the original without any commentary. At first I was going to translate TF1's commentary until the guy was saying that he knew of legionnaires who would go on leave with two taxis, one for them and one that they would put their kepi in. I mean WTF ! I think that it was to impress on people just how important the white kepi is. Make sure that you 'like' it. Here is the first -in both English & French- of my playlist called "Legion Traditions". If you know of anyone who is going to join, then share it with him. It should motivate him a little more.

“I advise no one to join the French Foreign Legion on the assumption of glamour or glory!” (Thomas Gast) #Frenchforeignlegion The only solution to join the French Foreign Legion is to travel to mainland France and knock on the door of one of the foreign legion recruiting centers called PILEs. Once you are in, free accommodation, food and clothing are immediately provided by the legion. There is no other way! ............. Be aware that this is NOT an official recruiting website of the French Foreign Legion. This is an information page run by Thomas Gast. Thomas was born in 1961. At the age of 23 he joined the French Foreign Legion, his “school of life.” His first two years were with the 3rd Infantry Regiment in French Guyana, he then served seventeen years, attaining the rank of Adjutant, in the elite 2nd Parachute Regiment (the only airborne unit in the French Foreign Legion), based on the island of Corsica. During this time, he was involved in a wide variety of overseas tours and theatres of operation. This vast experience inspired him to tell his stunning stories about this mysterious guild. ............. #Légionétrangère ֍֍֍ ... you like my channel? Video footage shows French Soldiers in heavy combat with African rebels in the Central African Republic. The scenes were released by the French Ministry of Defense and show the French army during several combat operations that took place during Operation Sangaris. Operation Sangaris was a military intervention of the French military in the Central African Republic, from late 2013 till 2016. It was the seventh French military intervention there since the independence of the country in 1960. On 30 October 2016, France announced it officially ended Operation Sangaris. According to Jean-Vincent Brisset, senior researcher at Iris, the name refers to the African butterfly Cymothoe sangaris, and was chosen because "butterflies are not dangerous, do not last very long, are considered pretty and are politically correct". In late 2012, President François Bozizé requested international aid from France and the US to fend off the Séléka, a rebel movement that had progressed to the vicinity of the capital Bangui. The Séléka is a Muslim and Northern movement fighting the Catholic South.[10] In March 2013, Michel Djotodia ousted Bozizé from power and became the first Muslim President of the country. In October 2013, fighting broke out between Séléka elements and Christian self-defence militias called anti-balakas, and the State lost its ability to maintain order. The United Nations and the French government started voicing concerns of potential genocide. On 5 December 2013, Resolution 2127 was unanimously voted by the United Nations Security Council to allow an African-led International Support Mission to the Central African Republic (MISCA) to be deployed for a 12-month duration to restore order and end religious tensions. The MISCA is supported by French forces authorised to use any necessary means.
