It was his first car. And after doing a replica version of his Vauxhall Firenza, he asked me to take this 1/43 scale Vanguards Californian and redo it in the same spec as his Imp. Lledo's Vanguards range was a fairly short lived but highly detailed line of mostly British marques in true 1/43 scale. They were taken on by Corgi following Lledo's 1999 bankruptcy. This isn't only my first foray into Vanguards, but also my first into 1/43 scale. The Imp I picked up had both wing mirrors snapped off and had glue covering the bonnet and surrounds to the front left headlight. One of the jewels had seemingly fallen out and had haphazardly been glued back in. So while otherwise looking like a good model, it was certainly rough around the edges. Handily, the wheels matched that of my dad's Imp, so it was a case of sourcing new lights, mirrors and giving it a custom paint job. Meet my neighbor, Jim. He is a man just like me, only he was born 60 years earlier and lived a life full of experiences not many are still around to tell about, let alone with a mind just as sharp as it was when he entered the Second World War in 1945 as a young man. Jim and I live across the street from one another, and have for many years. In all this time and through our friendship it has been one of my greatest desires to film him with his immense collection of vintage diecast toys, most of which he collected decades ago and lovingly displays in his basement, just as I do. Jim is a wonderful man, with a heart bigger then an elephants, and full of memories and stories that could fill thousands of pages in a fine print book. Jim is 91 years old, lives on his own, has outlived the only two women he has ever loved in his life, and drives his Buick daily to visit his many close children. If you like this video, please, leave a personal message for Jim, as I will be sharing them with him, although presently he is not very familiar with the internet, let alone YouTube. Many years ago after I first moved to this house I started a collection of diecast vehicles. Initially they were from the Lledo Days Gone range, and later their Vanguard series. These are only a few that were accessible, most of the Vanguards seldom see the light of day as I've limited space to display them. Now a days the only diecasts I collect are for the railway layout.
